Elderly patients receive less attention in the ICU
Seniors who are less likely to be treated in an intensive care unit (ICU) during a serious illness, according to a study presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference in Orlando May 24. The study of more than one million Medicare beneficiaries nationwide have found that a person over age 90 was one-third probability that someone aged 68 to 70 of the same race, gender, income and status of the disease are receiving treatment in intensive care or intensive care. The concern of this study is whether the elderly are not always cure that could help, said principal investigator Theodore Iwashyna, M.D., Ph.D., University Hospital of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.Although previous studies have shown that older people tend to have, not resuscitate orders, it
may be that physicians or family members assume that older people do not want aggressive care in general and can not be true. It also suggests that young patients and more aggressive treatment than they can actually do. The treatment appears to be as effective in an intensive care unit for a 85-year to a 65-year-old said Dr Iwashyna. For patients with lung cancer, 47.6% of persons aged 68-70 used in intensive care at some point, against only 25% of the age groups 86-90 and 207% of people over 90 years. This pattern was similar for all disease categories studied, including heart attack, stroke, hip fracture, heart failure, leukemia and lymphoma. For heart attack patients, days are 86 to 90 to 75% less likely to be in an intensive care unit care compared to 68-70 days, more than 90
